Chinese Porcelain: 2020 Color of the Year

PPG rang in the new year by announcing the 2020 Color of the Year, Chinese Porcelain (PPG1160-6). Chinese Porcelain was selected by PPG’s global color experts who explained the shade as a blend of cobalt and moody ink blue. This color brings a sense of calmness and hopefulness in such a restless world that we live in.

Dee Schlotter is the senior color manager for the PPG paint brand and shared, “The need for simplicity and escapism from technology is, in part, the reason that consumers are craving blues like Chinese Porcelain that bring us closer to nature elements such as the sea and sky – creating serenity in any space.”

Using Chinese Porcelain in Your Home

Part of the beauty of Chinese Porcelain is its versatility. You can use Chinese Porcelain throughout your home in many different ways. For instance, Chinese Porcelain can be incorporated in a bedroom as the feature color alongside white crown molding (we like using Delicate White) to provide a sharp and crisp contrast.

Our Reno interior design experts have also found that using Chinese Porcelain layered with other hues can create a stunningly dynamic living room.

“The faster technology moves and the more convenience it offers, the more we seek activities, experiences and lifestyles that impart slowness and realness into our lives.”

As recommended by Schlotter, you should pair Chinese Porcelain with different decors like lush-draped or velvet pillows that have warm saffron and turmeric tones. She also recommends pairing the hue with leather accents and sand tones that help grab the attention.

Along with being named the 2020 Color of the Year, Chinese Porcelain is the focal point for the PPG 2020 Global Color Trends Forecast. This helps guide and inspire designers, architects and homeowners that are in retail, hotel and residential markets. PPG has a very wide range of customers that rely on this forecast for new products and color choices.

Paintzen is a PPG-owned technology platform that helps people pick out colors and schedule painting services. According to Paintzen, blue is the most explored color family by users. Of the blue hues that are being viewed, Chinese Porcelain was the most engaged color on the platform.
