Pantone has selected the color of the year for 2019. On the eve of Art Basel Miami in Florida, Pantone announced “Living Coral” as the 2019 color of the year. This year marks a departure from the 2018’s emotive and dramatic “Ultra Violet” in favor of a cheery and uplifting coral, described as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”

Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year

Living Coral brings an optimistic and almost vintage twist to clothes, decor, and products. The orangish color is reminiscent of the faded warm colors of the ’70s and ’60s.

Be on the lookout for Living Coral to show up in accent pieces around the living room or as the living room’s own wall color. Color pairings with Living Coral include off-white neutrals, brass, and colored greens.

For textures, wood tones and white marbles do exceptionally well with Living Coral. Use Living Coral to highlight the centerpiece of your room, either through colorful wall art or a sofa throw. Check out our ideas below!

History of Pantone’s Color of the Year

Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institue has been observing global influences on color to determine the following year’s color trends. They look to art, fashion, pop culture – even film, social trends, and the current economic condition as factors for the color of the year.

Each year, Pantone’s announcement of color of the year, while not a declaration of the year’s trends, does impact many industries. Fashion and interior design are the most directly impacted, but other industries do get on board as well.

Take last year’s Ultra Violet. While this purple may seem situational in the realm of fashion, this color saw implementation in many web and mobile app designs.
