Deck Stains: 3 Ways to Keep Your Deck Looking GreatNovember 14th, 2016 by Oliver
Summer time means spending time outside, right? And if you’re fortunate enough to have a deck where you and your friends and family can kick back and enjoy the warm weather, then do yourself a favor, and keep your little wooden oasis in peak condition with a great wood stain. Let’s face it, as much as we like to pretend that we don’t live in the desert here in Reno, when summer comes around, the relentless, dry heat serves as a daily reminder of our firm place in the high desert.
The Nevada climate can be rough on outdoor furniture and decking—not only for the blistering heat, but the rain, and snow, and wind that come along with the distinctive four seasons we regularly experience. Now you may be wondering how one goes about staining a deck. I mean, it seems easy, right?
Truthfully, it’s a fairly easy process, but here are a few things you can do to ensure a good, long lasting stain that’ll keep your deck looking great and functional all summer long:
Get Started on a Temperate Day
You’re feeling ambitious, clearly, but be sure to wait for a day where the forecast is due to hit somewhere between 50 and 90 degrees with no rain in sight for at least 24 hours. This keeps your stain in the best condition possible for application and free of getting washed away by summer storms. Also, try to avoid applying in direct sunlight, and don’t be afraid to test your stain out in a small area before committing to the whole deck—make sure you love it!
Use Natural Bristles For Even Look
Natural bristled brushes pair best with your wooden deck. Keep your brushstrokes long and smooth, covering two to three boards at once, and be sure to keep the leading edge of your brush wet so you can get that nice, even look you’re looking for.
Less is More When it Comes to Stain
The temptation to load your deck up with stain is understandable; I mean, a bigger barrier means better protection, right? Think again. Too much stain can create a sticky surface on your deck, or even lead to cracking when met with moisture.
